When Stress Becomes a Presence


I woke up in the middle of the night, completely awake, but I couldn’t move, couldn’t speak, and there was a heavy pressure on my chest. There was also a figure in the room that was very real. I thought I had lost my mind… until I discovered that women across cultures have been describing this exact experience for centuries, sometimes calling it the Night Hag, the Mare, Kanashibari or as I recently learned, Inoculous.


In folklore, Inoculous isn’t random.

It enters through the cracks.

And stress creates those cracks.


So What Is It?

Is it folklore?

Is it the nervous system?

Is it something energetic?


Because While science explains a lot like sleep paralysis, stress physiology, nervous system overload, it doesn’t fully explain why these experiences often feel conscious, interactive, or even intentional. Across cultures, people report presences that seem aware of them, respond to attention, or communicate in subtle ways. They sometimes even come with sound and smell; very sensory.


Whether you call it folklore, energy, or just a part of human consciousness that science hasn’t mapped yet, the experience is profoundly real. And validating it doesn’t mean rejecting science. It means holding space for both measurable reality and the mysteries we still have to understand.


How We Close the “Openings”or the cracks

If stress creates the cracks… then this is about closing them.


1. Come back into your body Grounding is never optional, especially if you’re sensitive.

2. Stop overriding your physical and emotional limits Our bodies will get our attention eventually.

3. Reclaim your sense of control Even in uncomfortable states we all have more agency than we think.

4. Build energetic boundaries Not everything gets access to you. Not people. Not stress. Not even your own thoughts. Not the night hag. We all get to choose

5. Get curious instead of afraid Fear freezes. Curiosity moves energy.
