This exercise is a great tool to change our thoughts and perceptions around a difficult experience like the death of of loved one, divorce, a health crisis; any situation that threatened your safety or security.
Think about a time when you had a big change happen in your life that you felt was negative and to try to reframe it as a learning experience. What about you needed to change or grow in order for you to become a better or a more enlightened version of yourself? What gifts appeared as a result of it – there’s always a silver lining in a spiritual crisis (that’s how you know its not a mental breakdown -although you may have a mental breakdown during a spiritual crisis). Growth is usually accompanied by pain, so if you can’t identify a major spiritual crisis that occurred in your life, take yourself back to a painful situation and see if you can reframe it to find meaning in it.
